Yellow Markers and Fat Catechists

Once I wasn't that silly, I had both crayons and a pencil case,
I had a timetable with Lionel Messi, I'd study at home for every quiz.
Once I wasn't that silly, fat catechists1 would bring us milk and carrots,
And everyone drank it, and everyone ate them, and everyone gobbled them up2.
There's no good and evil, there's only those nice and those naughty,
and they swap Lego minifigures for stickers.
Every day at 7:30 there was a school assembly, and then the rosary.
First they'd drill us, and then we'd say amen.
Every day we'd read the Old Testament and the New Testament,
and The Word would become flesh.
There was this bald priest in glasses, he'd give us cool sermons.
Every first Friday we'd go to mass, on Thursdays there were meetings,
meetings for parents, not for us. They'd make us sandwiches for breakfast,
And sisters would give them to the homeless if we didn't eat up.
And sisters would make us toasts and tell us to kiss the bread if it fell to the floor, and we'd kiss that bread when it fell.
And now I'm begging you, please kiss me, too, because I'm waiting for a signal that I should get up.

And although I see with a naked eye that heaven and earth unite somewhere,
It's still far away and I'm really afraid that I'll lose my strength.
And although I actually know more proofs that you don't exist at all,
I'll still try to live as though you were.

Once I had a pretty wife and a plastic watch,
I'm thinking about that when I see a sleeping fish on the TV screen at four in the morning
I now appreciate nap times back in kindergarten, although I didn't sleep then at all.
And I'm thinking what is the nap time these days.
Do you remember us talking about various things before going to sleep,
sometimes even about stupid ones?
But I laid hope and faith in you like elbows on a windowsill,
or granulated tea on a table.
Because there are things that we mustn't drink
and that we mustn't eat, like rowanberries, for instance.
And when we eat fish, we have to watch out for bones, but we don't have to fast as much as adults.
And now touch me, just a little bit will be enough,
I don't want to go back anymore to our memories on the shield3.
And now touch me if you hear this, because I'd like to know so much that you're looking.

  • 1. 'katechetki' - 'female catechists'
  • 2. 'każdemu uszy się trzęsły' - lit. 'everyone's ears were shaking' which means that everyone ate eagerly.
  • 3. 'wspomnienia na tarczy' - lit. 'memories on a shield', hard to translate. Probably a reference to the idiom 'wrócić na tarczy' (lit. 'return on a shield'), which means 'to fail.'
