Northward of Trondheim

Northward of Trondheim there is an orchard,
its glow seen for fifteen miles around,
upon a small land.

Northward of Trondheim there lies a valley,
where my dearest sits, clear she is as a crystal.

And in that same valley there stands a small abode,
where my dearest sits, so pure she is as a light.

And down in that same house there sits a small chair,
where my dearest sits, so bright she is as the sun.

And under that same chair, there runs a river,
each night I visit my dearest in a dream.

And in that same river there float two vessels,
the one carries mead and the other holds wine.

I bestowed upon my dearest a drink,
certainly you've never had a better glass.

So my most dearest of all, she drinks and she drinks
certainly you've never had a better glass.

She has two seabirds which lay cover on her table,
which the third laid gold knives thereupon.

She has two seabirds, and they combed straight her hair,
the third holding up her golden mirror.

She has two seabirds which set and tidied her bed,
which the third laid a golden quilt upon.

Then I'd wish my dearest so many a good day,
like sand in the sea and grass in the grove.

Then I'd wish my dearest so many a good night,
as stars inhabit the darkened sky.

And if only I were home and home were here,
and the porridge boiled and laid in butter.
