God bless the day over ocean
God bless the light over land
God bless the eternal words
of hope and a helping hand

Take care of the small things you gave us
that day when you sat us down here
so we'll never feel that you'll ever
let us die from struggle and poverty

We lived with the cap in our hand
But we had such a strong faith
and something we've truly learned:
we are tough guys, just like you!

Now is the hardest time,
we struggle to go on
to the light and the Christmas time.
It's a long way to Betlehem...

God bless over mountain and hill,
Let it grow where we wanna live.
God bless the creatures in the barn
and a frozen and poor soil.

You'll see us in land of the darkness
you'll bless with the eternal words.
The houses, the hills and the water
and the folks living up here north.

Northern Norwegian Christmas Psalm

Blessed be the day over the fjords. Blessed be the light over land,
Blessed be the eternal words of hope and an outstretched hand.
Guard what little you gave us the day you carried us here.
So we know you will never let us expire in need and toil.

We lived hat in hand, but had such strong faith.
And one thing we've truly affirmed is: We're made of sterner stuff, just like you.
Now we face the hardest time. We struggle to make our way
Towards the light and advent days. The way south to Bethlehem is long.

God's peace upon mountain and hill. Let it grow where we build and reside.
God's peace upon the animals in the stall, and a frozen and meagre soil.
You see us in the land of polar night, you bless with eternal words,
The houses, the mountain, the water and the people who live here in the north.

The Lost Sheep

Far away upon the wild heath, in cold weather and wind
There wandered the wild sheep and could not find his way
He went around in circles, alone there, back and forth
As storm and ill weather roared, and he found little feed

But the herdsman longed for the sheep that had been lost
And he went out searching in fell and dale and cliff
At last he found the sheep, worn out, weak and low
And laid him on his shoulder with affection mild and warm

And now the sheep was saved from cold and need and night
And the herdsman was joyful because he had found him again
He called together his friends and they rejoiced together
Because the wild sheep was come home again that day

Yeah, I was the sheep, who went the wild way
And Jesus was the herdsman, who went out searching for me
He saved me from sin, and gave my heart peace
And therefore I will praise him for age and eternity

In heaven there is rejoicing when a sinner return
From the wild way, which is so cold and dim
Hear the herdsman's voice calling: come home from the wild way
Then you'll be saved from sin, which down to the darkness drags

The Fairest Rose Is Found

The fairest rose is found
Up through the thorns she is risen
Our Jesus the dearest bloom
Grown up among mere mortals

For since we lost the honour
To carry God's image in the heart
The world lay in desolation and disorder
And death harried us harshly

But the Lord made a rose bloom
For all the world to rejoice in
The scent to the heavens rises
Our earth to God's garden it hallows

So blooms God's church with honour
And the sweetest fruits can carry
In Christ she breathes and lives
And liquid to the growth he gives

Now surely the world should joyfully
Sing songs of praise for the saviour
But many look upon the thorns
And see not the heavenly rose

Thou sinner! Why make yourself hard,
Like a thorn bush yourself guard?
With prideful thoughts in mind
Just like thorns long and dense

Step down from your self-made height
And cry for your saviour down low
Then you shall his love know
And roses will in the dales grow

Now Jesus, you ever shall be
My rose, my adornment, my honour
You alone shall my heart take
Your sweetness I ever shall taste

My rose adornes and contents me
My rose gladdens and assists me
The sinful urges she drives off
And under the cross keeps me

Let the world threaten and compel me
Let the thorns rip and sting me
When the heart eventually ceases
The rose upon my chest I will fasten

The Lay of Roland

Six of my men stay home and keep the clear gold
The other six in heathen-lands keep iron cold1
Riding out of Frankish Lands with dear maiden in the saddle
Blow the horn Olifant upon the Roncevaux Meadow

They fought upon the Roncevaux Meadow for days two and three
The sun could not shine bright through mist of man-blood
Riding out of Frankish Lands with dear maiden in the saddle
Blow the horn Olifant upon the Roncevaux Meadow

Roland puts the horn to a bloody mouth and blows it with wrath
Then did burst earth and stone three days away
Riding out of Frankish Lands with dear maiden in the saddle
Blow the horn Olifant upon the Roncevaux Meadow

The world upside down

I bridled my boot and saddled my sword
then I tied my horse to my side
So I saddled up for a catmurder-ride
would stop that dangerous fight
I lay down and died, I dreamed tonight (1)
It seemed that the song was upside-down

And the raven was red, the squirrel was smooth
There were two animals in the forest
There stood two squirrels and tamed a bear
They wanted him as a plowman
I lay down and died, I dreamed tonight
It seemed that the song was upside-down

And the salmon up in the top of a tree
he tore the leaves off the twigs
And the squirrel at the bottom of the sea
he lifted big grey stones
I lay down and died, I dreamed tonight
It seemed that the song was upside-down

Then came an old blind man to see
how everything was going
And the moon was crowing and the stars were singing
while the cuckoo-bird shone in the valley
I lay down and died, I dreamed tonight
It seemed that the song was upside-down

The hulder and elland.

Elland was tired, long the summer day,
Getting no rest it did fill him with dismay.
Hard for the horse was the rugged way,
For the hills were always rising.

From. The saddle he down the dinner laid,
Hasten'd then to find a cosey restfil shade,
Where his couch of flow'rs and grass was ready made
Never bed was more enticing.

(REF)
Get up, get up, look behind you
Hear silver strings, how sweet they sound,
Look, a hulder. And now mind you, that
That to win you she is bound,
Many hearts for you are aching,
They shall win you never.
Oh, my heart for you is breaking,
And I'll love you ever.

Oh did you know Kjell?

Oh did you know Kjell?
Oh, did you know Kjell
He lived in the valley between two mountains
He had a wife, but what did she know?
She didn't know how to read or to write,
But certainly how to scold kjell.
And kjell got mad and stayed up all night
With the cat, till the moon rose.
That merry old fellow lit his pipe
And he sang and he sang.
That night was long.

The Evening Is Quiet

The evening is quiet
The hours roll by
Soundlessly down to the eternal realm
Only my thoughts
Listening wander
Will she not come tonight, not come tonight?

The winter dreams
The stars swim,
Though its thin veil of visions, and laugh
Mentioning summer
Lovemaking and blossoms
Dares she not meet me again, not meet me again?

A Dream

I once saw in a dream vision
A lovely maiden so fair and pure
We sat in the bright clearing of the forest
Between the young trees of spring
And the bud burst
And the river ran
The commotion and noises of the distant village
Towards us in our leaf hall resounded
Where we sat hidden in blissful joy
But much more than a dream vision
Life itself became, one lovely day
It was in the bright clearing of the forest
And under the light grip of spring
And the river ran
And the bud burst
And everything was distant
Only you were near
And by my chest
I held on to you
Now I'll never lett you go again!
Never again! Never Again!
O meeting in the forest clearing
With the light, bright grip of spring!
There my day became a dream vision
There my dream became a lovely day

I went to sleep so late

I went to sleep so late, far into the night
Not a care I had in the world
Then my love sent for me
To her I must come
No one I have loved more than her

I went to the top of her house
As I always used to do
There all the maidens had gathered
To dress my love in her burial shroud
No one I have loved more than her

Then I went out into the field so green
I heard the church bells ringing
All I knew, all I felt
Was that my heart would break
No one I have loved more than her
