May Holy Mary, our Advocate.

This is how Holy Mary saved the life of the honorable lady from Rome whom the devil accused in order to have her burned.
 
'May Holy Mary, our Advocate,
be forever blessed and praised.'
Verse I
I wish now to relate truthfully to you
a miracle most marvelous to hear,
of how the Virgin beloved of God
drove the devil out of Rome.

Verse II
A long time ago, in Rome,
there was a lady who loved
the Mother of God with all her heart.
However, she then succumbed to temptation by the devil.

Verse III
The lady lost her excellent husband
and almost died of grief.
She unwisely took comfort with a son
she had by him, who got her pregnant.
May Holy Mary....
Verse IV
The lady, when she found out she was pregnant,
was much distressed. When later she bore a son, she locked herself in her house where no one could see her and killed him.

Verse V
At that time, the chief devil
transformed himself into a wise man.
He claimed to be a diviner,
and the emperor took him into his hire.

Verse VI
Among other things that he divined,
he revealed the lady's deed.
He said that he wished to prove
it so that she would be burned.

Verse VII
Although the emperor heard it f
rom the diviner's lips, he was reluctant to believe it.
He had the lady brought before him,
and she came well accompanied.

Verse VIII
After the emperor summoned
the lady, he also called in the devil,
who told her all that had happened,
at which the lady was greatly amazed.

Verse IX
The emperor told her: 'Good
lady, It is up to you to answer'.
'Well' she said 'I'll have
a deadline to take advice'.

Verse X
The emperor set for them the following time:
'Three days from now, without fail,
let the wise man come to prove this accusation.
Otherwise, if he does not appear, his head shall be cut off.'

Verse Xi
The good lady went straight
to a church of Holy Mary,
as I learned, and prayed thus:
'My Lady, come to the aid of your poor servant.'
May Holy Mary....
Verse XIi
Holy Mary told her: 'This trial and tribulation
of yours is clearly the wise man's doing,
but consider him more vile
than a dog and take courage.'
May Holy Mary....
Verse XIiI
The good lady appeared willingly
before the emperor,
but the devil did not acknowledge
her or say anything to her.
May Holy Mary....
Verse XIV
The emperor said: 'In the name of Saint Martin,
oh wise man, your end is very near.'
But the devil grimaced at him and fled,
tearing a hole a fathom wide in the roof.
