Onions and Minced Pork (The Forgotten Ones Pt 3)

Where the bible on the bed sits next to the small calibre firearm
Since there have been homes again
Sing hymns in the morning, drinking songs in the evening
There are more graveyards than playschools
The grass is short and the hedges high
Spotless dress shoes
The bowling club is hetero1
The revolution doesn't smell like burning diesel
But like onions and minced pork
And every Saturday quakes with the song of the lawnmower
Thanks to Amazon, the shops' shelves are empty
School only 'till the 10th grade2 then off to the military
The time is running and we run slowly after it

And a madman yells 'the end is near'
An armageddon sign hanging around his throat
The TV-priest with the glossy hair
Says the end is here
And we're going to hell, yeah (Ah, ah-ah)
We're going to hell, yeah (Ah, ah-ah)
The end is here

Where the flag waves for the Fatherland
Sewn and 'Made in Pakistan'
People tell you over Rakı-Schnaps3 who they fuck
Not who they vote for, that's private, dammit
Out of protest against protest songs
The irritating Greta girl and the climate
Rescued a dog from Romania
But people on high seas should just die4
And every Sunday at noon the old people's home falls silent
Since the train station was decommissioned the tracks lead into nothing
The bikers sell [something] to the kids at the roundabout
The ravages of time are kept going artificially5

And a madman yells 'the end is near'
An armageddon sign hanging around his throat
The TV-priest with the glossy hair
Says the end is here
And we're going to hell, yeah (Ah, ah-ah)
We're going to hell, yeah (Ah, ah-ah)
The end is here

Standing at the roadside
Crosses with names in plastic sleeves
The nation laughs by their disposable barbecues
And time stands still

And a madman yells 'the end is near'
An armageddon sign hanging around his throat
The TV-priest with the glossy hair
Says the end is here
And we're going to hell, yeah (Ah, ah-ah)
We're going to hell, yeah (Ah, ah-ah)
We're going to hell, yeah (Ah, ah-ah)
We're going to hell, yeah (Ah, ah-ah)
The end is here

  • 1. This could be a reference I don't get, but this appears to be the literal meaning.
  • 2. I couldn't quickly find a British equivalent, but this seems to be the US version.
  • 3.
  • 4. This is more colloquial than just 'die', but none of the colloquialisms I can think of sound right here.
  • 5. I didn't see this line coming when I started the translation. The German version of 'the ravages of time' is literally 'the tooth of time', and here Casper says it's filled with dental amalgam, i.e kept going artificially. I'm not at all sure this is what he was going for, or if there was a thought going to the mercury content - not knowing about amalgam does not help, so suggestions welcome!
