Poem about lambs
On the road above lake, on clear spring morning,
Radiant in days of spirits – young one! young one! –
I went with you, my dear, into grove of pine trees.
Tenderly basked the sea in blue dream.
With century-old jellyfish, with languor of oysters, -
Tenderly basked the sea, with self reveling.
We meet dachas and blonde-Estonians,
Stern-faced maidens with awful age in the eyes.
And the lambs did not play tag in the waves,
And frolicked in freedom, thus open and thin,
Like ones born in the sea… What for – ah! – children
Aren’t born in cities like lambs.
Because there is city. Because there are fields.
Because there is sea. Because there is light.
Ah, you’re very cultured, but a soul you don’t have:
You don’t know sorrow, you don’t know agony,
That in capital was deprived of freedom and expanse,
That a snowdrop is wider… than university.
