Mr President - O head of state1
I'm writing you a letter that my kids have forgotten about me
It's about my son Karel and my younger daughter Eva
They haven't written for a year, they haven't come to visit for a year

You'll understand
You know everything surely
You'll consult, you'll sort it
You'll save me
O Mr President
I only want a little bit of happiness
For what else were we ringing
our keys in the square2

Mr President, and I also complain
that they've increased the price of my beer, my yoghurt, my sausages and my trams
And postage stamps and notepads
Even veal shoulder, Greece, and Germany - simply everything

You'll understand
You know everything surely
You'll consult, you'll sort it
You'll save me
O Mr President
I only want a little bit of happiness
For what else were we ringing
our keys in the square

Mr President, of my Czech republic
They let me go for an hour from my factory
For thirty years, everything was fine
Now new young people have arrived, and they're running it here like it's solitaire

You'll understand
You know everything surely
You'll consult, you'll sort it
You'll save me
O Mr President
I only want a little bit of happiness
For what else were we ringing
our keys in the square

Mr President - if my Anežka was live
Then she'd probably kill me for letter I'm writing now
they'd say: Jaromír, you're behaving like a little kid
Don't you know what worries he has with Europe and with space and everything?

You'll understand
You know everything surely
You'll consult, you'll sort it
You'll save me
O Mr President
I only want a little bit of happiness
For what else were we ringing
our keys in the square

O Mr President

  • 1. Difficult to translate ústavní činitel - literal meaning agent/executor/official of the constitution but translated like this so it makes sense in English and with 'O' to preserve the use of the vocative case
  • 2. During the Velvet Revolution, people jangled their keys during protests as a symbol for the government that it was time to go, and also the opening of doors
