Two Wolves
Once upon a time there was an old Indianwho told his grandchild
that inside every human being
there are two wolves.
One of them is good.
It lives on hope and courage.
The other one is evil and dreadful.
It always has bad and hideous thoughts in mind.
For ages, the two have been fighting
relentlessly without cease.
The only one to decide this fight
is you, so listen carefully:
Worry, regret and self-pity
are in constant struggle with hope.
Gentleness would like to dispel hate,
the Devil to swallow faith.
Anger is fighting serenity,
selfishness battling generosity.
Joy threatens to drown in grief,
love to be flooded by jealousy.
False pride and arrogance
are depriving humility of its splendor.
Kindness would like to convince envy
that lie is to give way to truth.
Guilt is trying to restrain excess,
modesty to prevent greed.
Resentment is mocking benignity.
Belligerence is a dread to peace.
This has been going on year in, year out.
Two wolves under one roof.
Eventually, the grandchild says:
»Tell me Grandfather, which wolf wins.«
The old Indian looks lovingly at the child:
»The one you feed. Always bear that in mind.«
