Miss Freckle

I have seen Miss Greece
I have seen Miss China
I have met almost all of the world's beautiful Misses
And I found them all to be pretty and fine
But when I came home to Värmland1
I met a Värmland gal
And to me she is the very sweetest of the sweet

Cute little Miss Freckle2
From Fryken3
Was made Miss Värmland this year
And every heart of Värmland throbs4
When she walks through the city
Cute little Miss Freckle
From Fryken
She is blonde like the rye of the meadow5
The most beautiful of all the girls I saw

She conveys the image of the fair Värmland6
And a beach by the Mediterranean is not a fit for her7
She wants to walk hand in hand
With the lakes and the woods8
And like the Karlstad sun9 she shines so happily
And she elicits fond laughter from us
She is the one I admire the most
And you should know that

Cute little Miss Freckle
From Fryken
She is blonde like the rye of the meadow
The most beautiful of all the girls I saw

She conveys the image of the fair Värmland
And a beach by the Mediterranean is not a fit for her
She wants to walk hand in hand
With the lakes and the woods
And like the Karlstad sun she shines so happily
And she elicits fond laughter from us
She is the one I admire the most
And you should know that

Cute little Miss Freckle
From Fryken
She is blonde like the rye of the meadow
The most beautiful of all the girls I saw

  • 1. Värmland is a historical province or 'landskap' in the west of middle Sweden. () The current Värmland County has more or less the same boundaries as Värmland Province. Although they didn't write this song, the band Sven-Ingvars probably picked it up since they are from Värmland themselves.
  • 2. Actually, 'Fräken' means the plant Equisetum (also known as horsetail, snake grass or puzzlegrass ()) and the real word for 'freckle' in singular is apparently 'fräkne', but as far as I've been able to tell, it still refers to freckles.
  • 3. Fryken is a chain of three lakes in Värmland (Upper, Middle and Lower Fryken) that has a number of different localities situated around it, which makes 'From Fryken' a very unspecific description. ()
  • 4. Lit. 'And every Värmland pulse beats'.
  • 5. I don't know if it's supposed to refer to a field, which is a more likely place to find rye, but 'meadow' is what 'äng' means.
  • 6. The end of this line alludes to the well-known song 'Ack Värmeland, du sköna' ('Oh Värmland, You Fair' ()), also known as 'Värmlandssången' ('The Värmland Song' or 'The Song of Värmland').
  • 7. Lit. 'And she doesn't fit a beach by the Mediterranean', but given the next couple of lines, my interpretation seems more likely.
  • 8. The lyricist has taken some poetic licence with the word order of the original, to get the rhyme of 'strand' and 'hand', but I wanted to make a translation that could be understood, so that's why these last two lines may seem to be switched.
  • 9. Karlstad, the capital of Värmland County, is reputed to be one of the sunniest towns in Sweden, and the logotype of Karlstad Municipality is a smiling sun. But the lyrics could just as well, or perhaps even likelier, refer to 'Sola i Karlstad' ('The Sun in Karlstad') who was a 18th century waitress and innkeeper who was famour for her 'sunny' disposition.
