Moby Dick

Part 1

Look at Starbuck, what a mild day,
I wonder if I still can remember it?
Forty years ago the first time,
Then I went hunting, hunting for the whale.

Harpoons and spears, that's my world,
An eternal fight only for fame and for money.
What is this madness, who will tell me the reason?
We're drifting on the rolling infernal maw....

And I feel old, I could be Adam,
Millions of years of torment and pain,
Since then, the escape from paradise,
When we left our God, and God left us.

Come, Starbuck, close, close to me,
So I won't always stare at the water.
I'd like to look into a man's eyes,
And only wish that you understood me.

What is it? What demon, what beast
Lurks hidden in my innermost being?
Love and longing are unknown to him,
It draws me to the sea, abhors the land.

It drives me to deeds, myself deeply hated,
It urges me and chases me, it rages and rages.
If Ahab is Ahab, if I am Ahab, it's God,
Who guides my arm, with malice and derision?

But if even the sun, the band of the milky way
Is guided by the Almighty's hand alone,
How can my heart throb, how can my mind think,
If God does not pull his strings in heaven?

Twisted and turned, as God wills it,
That we're all like this capstan over there,
The hand spokehen leads the fate alone,
The sky smiles, the sea joins in.

But look deep into the sea, look there!
There's only hunting and eating and murder!
Who gave these animals all this?
And what will be the punishment for killing?

But who's the judge, and what the decision,
If even before the barriers the judge must stand?
But I leave the brooding on such a beautiful day -
I see you tremble, why is the question....

You want to kill me, with your own hand?
Guide the ship safely to home?
But lack courage now, for your life's duty,
Oh, no, Mr. Starbuck, you're not saving me!

Bound by loyalty, bound to me,
You know in your heart, know as I do,
The act of this drama has long been in the book,
And to play it here, that's our curse.

You and I are nothing but characters in the play,
Planned ages ago because it pleased God,
Millions of years before the sea
Here surged and rolled, so long ago!

Part 2

They tell me, Starbuck, I'm full of hate,
Chasing the whale, that's what I enjoy?
They say self-defense, that was his motive,
But when he took my leg, he grinned crookedly.

And you, Starbuck, call it presumption?
I'd be willing to fight the sun, I suppose,
If it ever did me any harm.
You see, Starbuck, you're smart, aren't you?

No matter what we see, the true face,
Hidden behind masks, we don't see.
A higher being gave form to all being,
But I see through, see through alone.

The white whale challenges me eternally,
And that drove me out here on the ocean,
I see the mask behind which he is,
But I finally discovered the truth.

What behind the mask, I hate so much!
The evil! That makes our lives so hard!
Plagued by fears since time immemorial,
It dominates our thinking and makes us despondent.

Instead of killing us with a swift hand,
It mutilates us until we are burned out
Dahinvegetieren, the soul full of pain,
With half a lung and half a heart!

Now listen, Starbuck, and open your ears:
The crew stands by me, they've sworn.
I find none better than Harpooner,
So come along and follow me!

'I'll tell you, captain, right to your face,
I'm not on your side!
But Starbuck is no danger to you,
Only Ahab for Ahab, that's for sure.

So beware, captain, of yourself,
For what we began won't end well!'
