In Honour of My Soul’s Delight

I shall set forth my praising speech before my God, My father,
In honour of my soul’s delight, Elijah the Prophet.
 
God has planted in the People of Israel, the Rose of Sharon,1
A man of Aaron’s progeny,2, a servant of my Fort of Flint.3
 
A priest for God on High, Phineas, who is Elijah4
The prophet, they shall call him, from the Gilead, the Tishbite.5
 
On the day of God’s jealousy6 he killed with force and might
A leader of a tribe of Israel and the daughter of Zur named Cozbi.7
 
He had heard a ruling from his teacher: ‘A man who lieth with an Aramean woman8
Zealots harm him,’9 and he said, ‘I shall draw my sword!’10
 
And he rose from amongst his people, launched a throwing spear by hand,11
And was struck by shock and became as strong as a lion.12
 
He stabbed them with his sword as they lay,
Struck them onto the land, and brought them to Moses.
 
As a reward for this,13 the Eternal God gave him a perfect reward:
The covenant of eternal priesthood, and He absolved my debt.
 
Twelve miracles, numbered in their words,14
Did He who Resideth in Heaven, my flint, my redeemer, my father, perform for him.
 
Truth was in his mouth15 to a poor widow
When he revived her son16 and said to his spirit, ‘Return!’
